Comparison of Characteristics of Help-Seeking Behaviors between Delinquents and Non-delinquent School Adolescents



Abstract
In order to examine the differences between the delinquent(N=170) and the non-delinquent(N=219) adolescents in the characteristics of seeking. Out for help for their daily life difficulties and problems and of the perceptions of helpfulness by
the
selected helping agents, self-report qustionnaires were administered. Results show that both adolescents had more help from the informal helping agents, such as parents or friends than from the formal helping agents. Delinquent adolescents sought
help
from the parents less frequently than non-delinquent adolescents. In addition, the delinquent adolescents had a higher rate of never seeking help than non-delinquent adolescents. Both groups perceived the help from parents most beneficial. And
they
also
had the wish to seek help mostly from the parents. The things that the adolescents consider most important in seeking and choosing the helping agents were the shame. Confidentiality, fear to punish and concern to them.
